Just as in a car, clean air filters are essential to furnaces. Air filters remove dust and pollen, and should be replaced or cleaned as recommended by the furnace manufacturer. Check filters monthly during the heating season and in the cooling season if you have air conditioning.
Pleated throwaway-type filters are commonly used and are available in 1-inch, 2-inch, 4-inch and 6-inch thicknesses. They do a great job of filtering the air while keeping your system clean.
People with severe allergies may opt to have an electronic air cleaner installed. We recommend Trane clean effect filters. Electronic-type filters pick up much smaller particles out of the air stream than the pleated type and can be a huge benefit to people with respiratory issues.
Air filters use a MERV rating system regarding their efficiency. Residential furnaces should have a MERV rating of 8 to 11.
We can also supply you with special carbon filters used to remove odors from air. Ultraviolet lights can be used in conjunction with air filters to eliminate virus bacteria from air but are not much help in removing mold spores.
